A Muslim should maintain his decorum and seek not to avenge the one behaving like an ignoramus, in order to avert altercation and useless wrangle – potentially
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the
ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace, (Quran 25:63).
How would Prophet of God, Muhammad (peace
be upon him) react to hostility?
Good and evil cannot be equal. [Prophet], repel evil with what
is better and your enemy will become as close as an old and valued friend, (Quran 41:31). The Prophet exhibited concern that the people might be in distress for rejecting the message of God. But [Prophet]
are you going to worry yourself to death over them if they do not believe in this message? (Quran 18:6) The Prophet was merciful and his message is of mercy: It was only as a mercy that We sent
you [Prophet] to all people (Quran 21:107). The Prophet tolerated the insults: So [Prophet], bear everything they say with patience; celebrate the praise of your Lord before the
rising and setting of the sun; (Quran 50:39). The Prophet did not force his views upon others, but would remind the people about the accountability to God: We know full well whatever they say, and
you are, by no means, a compeller over them. Nevertheless, remind with this Qur'an, any who would fear My warning! (Quran 50:45). Furthermore, he was steadfast in reminding people about God’s message. So, [continue to] remind [all, O Prophet], for your duty is only to remind. (Quran 88:21)
Thus, the best course
for Muslims is to observe restraint [from anger], patience and to keep their commitment to God (i.e. Taqwa): you are sure to be tested through your possessions and persons; you are sure to hear much that is
hurtful from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with God. If you are steadfast and mindful of God, that is the best course. (Quran 3:138)
Therefore, in such circumstances, Muslims need not worry about replying to the insults and insolent antagonists.
And Allah knows best.
