Overcoming Obstacles to follow God's Guidance

There are plenty of difficult obstacles in your path in following guidance. Don't allow your self to become one of them by:

  • Following forefathers blindly:

When they are told, "Follow what God has revealed herein," they say, "We follow only what we found our parents doing." What if their parents did not understand, and were not guided? The example of such disbelievers is that of [parrots who repeat] what they hear of sounds and calls, without understanding. Deaf, dumb, and blind; they cannot understand. [2:170-71]

When they are told, "Come to what God has revealed, and to the messenger," they say, "What we found our parents doing is sufficient for us." What if their parents knew nothing, and were not guided? [5:104]

  • Following the majority:

If you obeyed most of those on earth, they would lead you away from the path of God. They follow nothing but speculation; they are merely guessing. [6:116]

  • Considering the Quran to be too complicated and unclear for comprehension:

We have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: will anyone take heed? [54:17]

"Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down: this Book is a perfect guide for mankind and consists of clear teachings which show the right way and are a Criterion of the Truth and falsehood."[2:185]

We have made this Book easy in your own tongue so that they may ponder and take good counsel. [44:58]

  • Following the Clergy over the Message:

They have taken as Lords beside God their Rabbis and their Monks and the Messiah son of Mary, when they were bidden to only worship One God.[9:31].

"And they shall say: O our Lord! Surely we obeyed our leaders (Arabic: Sadatana) and our great men (Arabic: Wakubaraana), so they led us astray from the path" [33:67]

"Then We sent in their tracks Our messengers. We sent Jesus the son of Mary, and We gave him the Injeel, and We ordained in the hearts of his followers kindness and mercy. But they invented Monasticism - We did not ordain it for them, only that they should seek Allah's good pleasure - and even so, they did not observe it properly." [57:27]

  • The quest for a teacher or explainer of the Quran besides God:

We have brought people a Scripture- We have explained it on the basis of true knowledge - as guidance and mercy for those who believe. [7:52] also see: 6:105, 6:65, 10:24.

  • Failing to seek knowledge, verification and proof:

(O man), do not follow that of what you have no knowledge. Indeed! The hearing and the sight and the heart - of each of these it will be asked.[17: 36]

"Or, have they taken besides Him gods? Say: Bring your proof. This (is) a reminder of those with me and the reminder of those before me. Nay! Most of them do not know the truth so they (are) averse". [21.024]

...Say: Bring your proof if you are truthful". [Part of 27.64]

And even before your time [Prophet], all the messengers We sent were only men We inspired - if you do not know, ask people who know the Scripture [21:7] That is, “If you do not know this, ask the followers of earlier revelation”. The wisdom to be learnt here is of verification.

  • Refusing to accept proof and guidance from God Almighty.

I will keep distracted from My signs those who behave arrogantly on Earth without any right, and who, even if they see every sign, will not believe in them; they will not take the way of right guidance if they see it, but will take the way of error if they see that. This is because they denied Our signs and paid them no heed [7:146]

If anyone contends with the Messenger even after guidance has been plainly conveyed to him, and follows a path other than that becoming to men of Faith, We shall leave him in the path he has chosen, and land him in Hell,- what an evil refuge! [4:115]

  • Succumbing to Peer Pressure:

On that Day the evildoer will bite his own hand and say, ‘If only I had taken the same path as the Messenger. Woe is me! If only I had not taken so and so as a friend - he led me away from the Revelation after it reached me. Satan has always betrayed mankind.’[25:27-29].

  • Fear of the reaction and perceived consequence from the People:

They say, ´If we follow the guidance with you, we shall be forcibly uprooted from our land.´ Have We not established a safe haven for them to which produce of every kind is brought, provision direct from Us? But most of them do not know it. [28:57]

It is Satan who urges you to fear his followers; do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are true believers. [3:157]

  • Following base whims/desires:

If they do not respond to you then know that they are merely following their whims and desires. And who could be further astray than someone who follows his whims and desires without any guidance from Allah? Allah does not guide the people of the wrongdoers. [28:50]

  • Quarrelsome and egocentric nature of Man:

In this Quran We have presented every kind of description for people but man is more contentious than any other creature. [18:54]

Thus, whenever Allah is mentioned as the sole Omnipotent and Exclusive Authority, sadly Mankind in general and even many Muslims insolently turn their backs, with a mental attitude of opposition and repugnance:

And we place shields over their hearts, that they should not understand it, and a deafness in their ears. And if you mention your Lord in the Qur'an alone, they run away turning their backs in aversion. [17:46]

And Allah knows best
