Righteousness : An Individual Matter

Nobility of birth without spiritual nobility of (Iman) faith and righteous action brings no honour and reward from The One true God.

Recall that Abraham was put to the test by his Lord, through certain commands, and he fulfilled them. (God) said, "I am appointing you an imam for the people." He said, "And also my descendants?" He said, "My covenant does not include the transgressors." [2:124]

Such is a community from the past. They are responsible for what they earned, and you are responsible for what you earned. You are not answerable for anything they have done. [2:134]

Kinship with Prophets will not benefit anyone in the least. Their faith and good works are for themselves, not for their descendants. Every person shall be judged on his own merits, not on the merits of his forefathers. Hence, it is inferred that it is fruitless to rely upon the ancestry or deeds of the righteous predecessors or patriarchs.

And be conscious of the Day on which you shall be brought back unto God, whereupon every human being shall be repaid in full for what he has earned, and none shall be wronged. [2:281]

And Allah knows best.

For Younger Readers

God teaches in the Quran, the holy book of Muslims that:

  • No person is better than another by virtue of DNA, tribe or ethnicity…

  • Nor is any relationship with good/pious/righteous relatives or forefathers any sign of his/her own piety/goodness/righteousness
